New Delhi: In a fresh uptick in violence in the state, Manipur Police said that ten armed Kuki “militants” were killed in “retaliatory firing” when they assaulted security officers in Jiribam on Monday afternoon in Manipur.
At around 3 p.m., the individuals, who were carrying advanced weaponry such as automatic rifles and a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG), assaulted a Central Reserve authorities Force (CRPF) position in the Borobekra-Jiribam region. According to the authorities, they were killed in “retaliatory firing.” The Hmar tribal tribe is in charge of the region.
According to the police statement, a criminal case has been filed and the event is being looked into.
The situation was brought under control following a fierce firefight that lasted for forty to forty-five minutes. Ten armed terrorists’ dead corpses were found together with weapons and ammo when the area was investigated after the gunfire stopped, according to the statement.
In addition to bulletproof jackets, helmets, and magazines, the police reportedly found three AK-47s, four self-loading rifles (SLRs), two Indian Small Arms Systems (INSAS), one rocket-propelled grenade (RPG), and one Pump Action Gun.
The Committee on Tribal Unity’s (CoTU) media secretary, Thangtinlen Haokip, told ThePrint that these were “village defence volunteers” rather than militants.

The CRPF was suspected of complicity by the Hmar Students’ Association, who denounced the event as a “premeditated massacre of Hmar Village Volunteers.”
Social media videos that depict the ruthless dragging of the corpses attest to the CRPF’s involvement. According to their statement, “all village volunteers in Kuki-Zo areas are now on high alert, ready to defend their people against further aggression.”
The Kuki-Zo Council’s secretary of communication, Khaikhohauh Gangte, stated in a news release that the organization has declared a “total shutdown” from Tuesday from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. “in honor of the victims and to express our collective grief and solidarity who were brutally shot dead.”
“The families of our beloved Kuki-Zo are devastated, but so is the whole Kuki-Zo Community, which is united in its pursuit of justice, peace, and security. We vehemently denounce the violence that occurred today and demand prompt, comprehensive investigations to hold those responsible for it accountable.
This occurs days after Zairawn, another Hmar-dominated village in the Jiribam district of Manipur, was brutally attacked Thursday night, reportedly leading to the rape and burning alive of a 31-year-old lady.
Violence in the area escalated when 80 to 100 armed attackers, purportedly from the Meitei community and extremist armed Meitei organization Arambai Tenggol, opened fire on the villagers and burned up to 17 homes on fire, according to locals.
In another incidence, a Meitei woman was shot dead on Saturday while working in a paddy field in the Bishnupur area by suspected Kuki militants.
Sanjeev Kumar, a CRPF constable, was shot in the Monday incident, according to the police In Manipur.
According to the source, one of the three badly injured CRPF members has been sent to Silchar, Assam, for additional medical care.
Additional state and federal security troops have been sent to the region to keep the peace after the incident.
The Borobekra Police Station in Jiribam District is still conducting operations in and around Jakuradhor to rid the area of armed militants. Assam Rifles, CRPF, and Civil Police reinforcement squads have been sent there, police said.
There has been a red alert in the neighborhood. We will be conducting area domination exercises and have expanded the deployment. Authorities are keeping a careful eye on events in Jiribam, where the situation is still tight, according to the source mentioned above.
