AAP won 28 of these 31 seats – the main reason for which was the free travel in public buses announced by the Arvind Kejriwal government just a year before the Delhi Assembly Elections 2025.
Note that this trend of attracting women voters of Delhi through electoral promises was started in 2008 by the then Chief Minister Sheila Dixit, who launched the ‘Laadli’ scheme, under which Rs 10,000 was deposited in the bank for the education of every girl child born in a family with an annual income of less than Rs 1 lakh.
For the Delhi Assembly Elections 2025 to be held on February 5, the Aam Aadmi Party has been at the forefront in attracting women voters and has promised to give Rs 2,100 under the Chief Minister Mahila Samman Yojana to those women whose family income is less than Rs 3 lakh per year.
Nomination for this scheme was also started, but the process got into legal trouble, as the Delhi government rejected it through a public notice. It is worth noting that the BJP’s ‘Sankalp Patra’ released by BJP National President JP Nadda promises to give women a monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,500, which is equal to the assistance amount given by Delhi Congress to poor women.
The BJP has called the monthly assistance for women ‘Mahila Samridhi Yojana’. While the Congress has named it ‘Pyaari Didi Yojana’. Ahead of polling day on February 5, BJP leaders are trying to convince voters that it is their party that will fulfil its promise to women.
They point to the monthly financial aid provided in BJP-ruled states like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Haryana as evidence. On the other side, Kejriwal asserts that he initiated a national program that provides free bus travel for women.
The scheme is believed to have had a huge impact on the results of the 2020 elections and AAP came to power for the third time. Because Kejriwal’s intention is to come to power for the fourth time.
So he has expanded the scheme to attract young voters, offering free bus travel to students and 50 percent discount on metro rail fares.
On this promise of Kejriwal, the argument of political analysts is that if this formula works, then hardly anyone can stop Kejriwal’s victory in Delhi. As we have already informed above that the sole objective of the parties in Delhi is to woo women.
That is why BJP also wants to remain in the eyes of poor women voters and has announced that if its party forms the next government after the Delhi Assembly Elections 2025 of 5 February, then all the public welfare schemes including free bus travel will continue in Delhi.
Let us tell you that in the manifesto of BJP, pregnant women have been promised a one-time financial assistance of Rs 21,000 and six nutrition kits, apart from this, Rs 5,000 will be given for the first child and Rs 6,000 for the second child.
Experts argue that these promises seem to be on the lines of the benefits given under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana in the rest of the country, which was not available in the cities till now. After BJP and AAP, once again we would like to mention Congress.
Delhi Congress has promised to give free monthly ration kits to women to ease their monthly household expenses. Delhi Congress President Devendra Yadav said that all the poor will be given a monthly ration kit containing 5 kg rice, 2 kg sugar, 1 liter cooking oil, 6 kg pulses and 250 grams of tea for free.
However, which way the tables turn in the Delhi Assembly Elections 2025 and who wins between Aam Aadmi Party, BJP and Congress? Only time will decide this. But the atmosphere is like before the Delhi Assembly Elections 2025 and the way the parties are eyeing women.
